Google starting to penalise link buyers?
Its now well known that Google has been actively pursuing sites that have been selling links for the purpose of passing on Page Rank and boosting the natural search position of the buying site. Selling sites have seen their Page Rank reduced and some have been penalised with bans or SERPS drops.
However it was widely thought that the worst that would happen to the buying site would be that any bought links that were discovered woud be devalued, but that no direct penalty would be given to the buying site. This was presumed to be the case as what is there to stop a competitor buying links to your site, then reporting your site to Google hoping to get you banned for something you didn’t actually set out to do.
Well this assumption that you were safe as a buyer of links may now be flawed as we are starting to see reports of sites being penalised, see this thread at SEOChat for more details.
