Microsoft to buy Yahoo for $44.6bn?
Microsoft has offered to buy Yahoo for $44.6bn in a combination of cash and shares. This equates to a whopping 62% above the closing price for Yahoo shares the day before the offer.
For a long time observers have been speculating as to how Google’s dominance of the search market could ever be challenged. Now maybe we have the answer, with Yahoo’s respected search experience and Microsofts deep deep pockets a combined search offering could return competition to the search sector.
Yahoo have been reported to be struggling recently with rumours of expected layoffs in the engineering departments at the search giant, so maybe Microsoft’s offer will be received more warmly than in previous years.
Whatever the outcome it is a bold move by Microsoft and we look forward to finding out how it is received.
