Wikia Search Launches

More than a year after it news emerged that Jimmy Wales the co-founder of Wikipedia was working on a new project to create a new search engine it has finally launched today at www.wikia.com.

The major difference between wikia and the more established search engines is the focus on transparency over how search results are calculated (the engine utilising the open source project Nutch as part of its infrastructure). In fact Wikia seems to be setting out to be a search engine and social networking hybrid with a full set of social networking tools and functionality embedded into the system.

Another departure from the traditional search engines is that the search results pages are treated as a mini-article that users who have registered can alter and make comment on.

The big question remains as to whether wikia can make any impact in a search arena dominated by the big 3 of Google, Yahoo and MSN… only time will tell.
